Old Man Drew

Once a used truck parts business, this more than century old Ascot Vale building was given new life when HDZN was engaged to transform it into Old Man Drew. Working closely with the owners, the design centred on adaptive reuse, retaining the historic building while creating new dining spaces, a landscaped garden and courtyard, commercial kitchen and tea rooms. A previously unknown basement, discovered during the works, was also adapted into an intimate private dining room.

The transformation required a complex heritage and planning process, allowing the existing building to be retained while accommodating an entirely new use. Almost a decade later, Old Man Drew remains a much loved Melbourne destination and has also featured on Better Homes and Gardens.
