Working in consultation with the City of Boroondara, HDZN transformed an underused concrete area within Camberwell Fresh Food Market into a welcoming communal space for traders, shoppers and the wider community.
The design introduces integrated seating, planting, layered lighting and a suspended green canopy to soften the existing industrial character and create a warmer, more inviting environment. Accessibility, visibility and movement were carefully considered to ensure the space remained open, legible and inclusive, while still offering a distinct place to sit, pause and gather.
HDZN remained involved through the works with regular coordination meetings, reviewing progress and resolving design matters as the project developed. The result is a small but meaningful public space that brings greenery, comfort and social connection into the everyday life of the market.
